Frequently Asked Questions
Can you replace my staircase without remodeling the whole house?
Usually, yes. Most replacements and upgrades, including new treads, risers, railings, and newel posts, are done within the existing stairwell. If the layout itself has to change, our framing crew handles the surrounding structure.
What does stair code require?
Residential code as used in Oklahoma sets limits for a safe staircase: consistent riser heights with a maximum of about 7 3/4 inches, treads at least 10 inches deep, handrails between 34 and 38 inches high, guards at least 36 inches on open sides, and 6 feet 8 inches of headroom. We build to those limits on every staircase.
Do you install cable railing?
Yes. Cable railing is a popular upgrade for both interior stairs and decks because it keeps sightlines open. We build the wood posts and rails and install the cable hardware tensioned correctly so it meets code.
Which hardwoods do you use for treads?
Red oak and white oak are the most common choices and match most existing floors. Maple, hickory, and walnut are also available. We will match the species and stain to your flooring where that is the goal.
